Please join us for Winning Beginning Wednesday on Wednesday, February 29, where early care and learning advocates from around the state come to Albany to visit their representatives and educate them on the importance of investing in our children to help strengthen our local economy.

We will meet at the Child Care Council office on the morning of February 29 for a breakfast reception. Then, we will travel to the legislative office building together and go to pre-scheduled meetings with our Legislators to discuss the importance of investing in early childhood. The more people who join us, the more impact we will have. Please join us and plan to share your stories with your Representatives.

Reading Aloud to Children
Reading aloud to children is a wonderful way to build community within the classroom. Having children gather together to hear stories of far away places, interesting people, and new ideas can help them to build a life-long love of reading. There a few elements to keep in mind as we foster a love of reading.
  1. Select books that have interesting pictures. This will draw children's attention as you read the text.
  2. Be playful and have fun while reading aloud.
  3. Know the story and concepts being introduced so you are ready to respond to questions from your audience.

Children at this age are excited and like to ask questions and make comments during read-alouds. This active participation lets us know they are engaged in the story. Reading aloud to children takes us all on a journey, providing rich opportunities for discussion and overall enjoyment!

New Workshop Series Just for Family and Group Family Child Care Providers

The Child Care Council is proud to present a new training series developed just for family and group family child care providers. This series will be offered throughout the year, with new workshop topics and in a new location each time. The first series is scheduled to take place in Saratoga and offers a wide variety of workshops tailored to the unique needs of family child care.

Stress, It's Not Just a Grown-Ups Problem

A recent notice from the American Academy of Pediatrics gives a startling warning that "toxic stress" can hurt a child for life. Toxic stress happens when a child faces long periods of stress without the protection of a responsive relationship with a caring adult.

Toxic stress is linked to prolonged exposure to unhealthy lifestyles, drug abuse, unhealthy exercise habits, financial hardship, and other health and social issues.

So, how do we protect children from the effects of toxic stress? ...Relationships that bring comfort and a sense of safety to the child's world.

Program to Help Low-Income New Yorkers Reduce Energy Bills Gets Increased Funding from NYSERDA in 2012

To help larger numbers of low-income households cut their energy bills in the coming year, funding for EmPower New York will increase by $18 Million, providing a total of $46 million in 2012, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) announced today.

EmPower New York is a NYSERDA program to help low-income residents reduce their use of electricity, improve the efficiency of their heating systems and increase the comfort of their homes. Funding in 2011 totaled $28 million. The additional funding for 2012 is allocated through the Energy Efficiency Portfolio Standard Order of Oct. 25, 2011.

EmPower New York services are provided free to households earning 60 percent or less of the statewide median income (HEAP eligible). Services include high-efficiency lighting, replacement of inefficient refrigerators and freezers with new ENERGY STAR qualified models, heating system upgrades, insulation and air sealing, and health and safety testing to ensure the home is properly ventilated and gases are not escaping into the living space.
