Are there any subsidies that can help me pay for my child's care?

Can a Parent Educator at the Child Care Council recommend a child care provider?
No. Parent Educators encourage parents to visit many child care programs, including family and group family child care providers or child care centers in order to find the child care setting that best meets the needs of the family. Is there a lot of paperwork involved if I join the Food Program?
Not really, in fact you can keep all of your menu and attendance records on-line and submit your monthly records via the internet. If you don’t have a computer with internet access you will be provided with forms to use for your record keeping.

What ratio of bleach and water should be used to disinfect surfaces and toys in child care programs?
The spray solution for non porous, hard surfaces, such as diaper-changing tables and counter tops, is one tablespoon for each quart of water. The soaking solution for toys that children mouth is three quarters of a cup to one gallon of water.

May a child care program operate in a basement?
A basement is defined as that portion of a building that is partly or completely below the ground. Child care regulations do not automatically disallow the use of basements for child care. When an applicant proposes to use a basement, a fire safety representative must inspect and approve the designated space before any basement may be used as a child care space.

What is meant by the term serious injury as it is used in the following New York State Office of Children and Family Services regulation?
“The caregiver must immediately notify the Office upon learning of the death, serious injury or infectious illness of an enrolled child which occurred while the child was in care at the program or was being transported by a caregiver.” An injury is considered serious if it requires professional medical attention. This would be an injury that is beyond the routine superficial cuts, scrapes and bug bites that are so common among young children.

Once I am approved as a Legally Exempt provider, how long will I be enrolled?
Enrollment is valid for one year.

Does Legally Exempt status mean that I am tax-exempt as well?
No, you will need to complete a 1099 form from the Department of Social Services – and you will need to pay taxes on the amount you earn. The amount of money that you earn is considered taxable income.

What is the maximum number of children that I can care for as a Legally Exempt provider?
You may provide childcare for two full-time unrelated or eight full-time related.

How can community members get involved in the work of the Council?
There are many ways for the community to support the mission of the Council. One way is to sign up to receive email alerts from the Council. Another way is by serving on the Board of Directors. Whether you have a little or a lot of time, your involvement helps to further the Council’s mission, which is to promote quality child care throughout the greater Capital Region. What community reports and publications are available?
The Council publishes an annual regional child care needs assessment called the “Picture of Child Care.” This free report is available to individuals, child care programs, community agencies, and businesses in February of every year. The Council’s quarterly newsletter, “The Leader” is available to all interested community members.
