School-Age Care

Provider Training and Technical Assistance

Annual School-Age Conference

Each fall the Council offers a School-Age Child Care Conference designed to meet the training needs of school-age care professionals. This day long conference incorporates interesting topic discussions and hands-on creative workshop experiences with opportunities for networking and professional growth. Morning workshops start the day with a relaxed lunch followed by afternoon workshops. School-age professionals are invited to present workshops or to facilitate round table discussions. Contact Lea Maggiulli at lmaggiulli@cdcccc.org or Lynn Siebert at lsiebert@cdcccc.org for conference details.

School-Age Program Improvement and Accreditation

The Accreditation system supports school-age programs in an assessment process that promotes quality standards in areas of administration, human relationships, activities, indoor and outdoor environment, safety, health, and nutrition. As part of the Accreditation Project, the School-Age Coordinator mentors SAC Programs through the Self-Study Process. Contact Lynn Siebert at lsiebert@cdcccc.org.

Individualized Training and Technical Assistance

Child Care Council School-Age Educators use the School-Age Care Environment Rating Scale (SACERS) to assess the overall learning environment and experiences. The SACERS consist of 49 items that assess the quality of the school-age environment including use of space, materials and experiences to enhance the school-age child’s development, daily schedule, and supervision. This 49 item scale covers seven categories:

Overall scores are determined and individualized training plans are made for each provider. Individualized Training Plans (ITP) include classroom pre and post SACERS and from 10 to 50 hours of technical assistance. Please contact Lynn Siebert at lsiebert@cdcccc.org to set up an individualized training plan. Individualized training plans support school-age program accreditation projects.

School-Age Provider Workshops

Workshops are intended for staff working with school-age children in registered or licensed programs, family, friends and neighbors who are legally-exempt from regulation as well as regulated family child care providers. Participants who complete the training receive a certificate from the Council. The training can be offered on-site at a school-age or child care center or at one of the Council’s training centers. To meet the specific needs of your program, the training is custom-designed. Visit the Compass webpage for a current workshop schedule or contact Lynn Siebert at lsiebert@cdcccc.org.

New York State School-Age Care Credential

The NYS School-Age Care Credential has been developed to promote quality services to children and families by providing specific standards, training, and evaluation of school-age staff members and providers. It is an opportunity for adults working with school-age children to gain professional recognition for demonstrating competence in their on-the-job skills. The Council’s School-Age Educators conduct SAC Credential Preparation Classes and serve as advisors. The Council serves as the state-wide coordinator of the School-Age Credential. Please contact Lynn Siebert at lsiebert@cdcccc.org regarding renewal, endorsement, preparatory course work, or final assessments.
