The Family Centered Child Care Approach

Family centered child care is an approach that supports families by empowering them to access community resources and build partnerships with parents, child care providers, and the community. The Family Centered Child Care Approach project is funded by The Schenectady Foundation.

The goal of the Family Centered Child Care Approach Project is to work with a not-for-profit center in Schenectady County and create a supportive network for the optimal development of the child, the family, and the teaching staff.

There are five areas of change that are the focus of the project:

  • Parent education
  • Administration and leadership education
  • Child development and curriculum
  • Facility improvement
  • Health and nutrition education

The second phase of the Family Centered Child Care Approach is to promote the benefits of the FCCC Approach to other centers in Schenectady County through a free training series. The Family Matters Training Series is a series of workshops that was created from the Harvard Research Project for Family Centered Child Care. The series is intended to educate the provider community about family centered child care. The series of six trainings included topics such as principles of family centered care, parent-provider relationships, and concepts and models of family involvement. The training series was also a requirement for programs who wished to participate in the FCCCA Project 2008-2009 year.

The Family Matters training series and the continuation of the Family Centered Child Care Project has been generously funded by The Schenectady Foundation.
